Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi will abide by a court ruling on the suspension of parliamentary elections, state television reported on Thursday.

“The presidency confirms its full respect for the ruling issued by the Administrative Court to enhance the rule of law,’’

Morsi’s office was quoted as saying.

The court on Wednesday overturned a presidential decree calling for the poll to be held in four rounds starting next

month.

It ruled that Morsi’s failure to consult with the prime minister and cabinet before calling the election was in violation of

Egypt’s new constitution.

The court also referred a disputed electoral law, endorsed by Morsi, to the Supreme Constitutional Court for a ruling on

its legality.

Egypt has been without a lower house of parliament since June, when the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that the

electoral rules were unconstitutional.

The president has for months been locked in a bitter dispute with the mostly secular opposition, which accuses him of

behaving like a dictator.

It says Morsi is tightening the hold of his Muslim Brotherhood on power and vowed to boycott the election over a lack of transparency.

The previous election resulted in a parliament dominated by Islamists.
