Police, vigilante arrest 4 suspected cultists in Anambra

Onitsha (Anambra), Sept. 17, 2025 (NAN) The Police Command in Anambra, in a joint operation with local vigilante operatives have arrested four suspected cultists following a violent clash at Nsugbe, Anambra East Local Government Area.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed this in a statement in Awka on Wednesday.

Ikenga said that on Sept. 16, at about 7 a. m., armed miscreants suspected to be cultists were attacking one another with cutlasses, broken bottles, daggers and other dangerous weapons behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.

According to him, a swift response by a combined Police and the Vigilante team led to the arrest of the four suspects.

He revealed that the arrested suspects were all male and aged 23, 24, 25 and 26 respectively as others escaped into the nearby bushes.

“During the fracas one of the suspects, sustained machete cuts.

“He has been provided with medical care and is currently responding to treatment for onward necessary action by the operatives.

“The suspects have all confessed to being members of the dreaded “AYES” confraternity, the case is currently under investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing cultists,” he said.

Ikenga quoted the state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, as reassuring the people of Anambra that the command remains relentless in its fight against cultism and other forms of violent crimes in the state. (NAN)
