Abuja, Feb. 9, 2026 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has debunked reports claiming that 30 persons were killed in a recent road traffic crash in Kano State, confirming that seven persons lost their lives in the incident.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed said this in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Monday in Abuja.

Mohammed said that the confirmed figure was established through on-the-spot assessment and verified rescue operations carried out by its operatives at the crash scene.

He urged the public and media organisations to rely on officially confirmed information to prevent the spread of misinformation and undue public anxiety.

According to him, the fatal crash occurred on Sunday, Feb. 8, at about 8:33am along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

“The crash involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG467YG, which was conveying 105 passengers at the time of the incident.

“A breakdown of the casualties showed that out of the 105 persons involved, 70 sustained varying degrees of injuries, comprising 55 adult males and 15 male children.

“Seven adult males were confirmed dead, while 30 passengers were rescued by the FRSC emergency rescue team without sustaining any injuries,” he said.

The FRSC boss stated that preliminary investigation attributed the cause of the crash to speed violation, which eventually led to loss of control (SPV/LOC).

Mohammed described speeding as one of the deadliest traffic violations on Nigerian roads, warning motorists against turning highways into death traps.

He stressed that once a driver exceeds the prescribed speed limit, vehicle control is compromised, reaction time is reduced, and the chances of survival in a crash become minimal.

He emphasised that no journey was worth the loss of innocent lives.
The Corps Marshal noted that the magnitude of casualties recorded in a single crash was a clear manifestation of the devastating consequences of reckless driving.

He added that vehicles driven at excessive speed become lethal weapons capable of wiping out entire families within seconds.

Mohammed further warned that the FRSC would continue to intensify enforcement operations nationwide, stressing that motorists who violated speed regulations would face the full weight of the law without exception.

He called on all road users, particularly commercial drivers, to obey speed limits, drive responsibly and prioritise safety over haste.

He lamented that the pain of losing loved ones to preventable crashes was a burden no family should bear, reminding motorists that speed limits were designed to save lives and must not be ignored.
