Ogun SWAN mourns ex-chairman, Hakeem Akintunde

Abeokuta, Feb. 12, 2026 (NAN) The Ogun Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former Chairman, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde.

The Association, in a condolence message signed by the Association Chairman, Mr Michael Azeez-Ogunsiji, on Thursday in Abeokuta described the late Akintunde as a committed professional.

Azeez-Ogunsiji also described the deceased broadcaster as an exemplary leader and passionate advocate of sports development in Ogun and Nigeria at large.

He noted that during his tenure as chairman of the association in the state, Akintunde demonstrated uncommon dedication to the growth of sports journalism and fostered unity among members.

He added that the deceased also strengthened the association’s relationship with key stakeholders in the sports sector, thereby advancing sports reporting and administration in the state.

”Alhaji Akintunde was widely respected for his integrity, humility and unwavering commitment to excellence.

“Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a mentor and father figure to many young sports journalists, offering guidance and support that shaped numerous careers

“The news of his demise is a monumental loss not only to SWAN in Ogun but also to the entire sporting community in the state and across Nigeria.

“His legacy of service, discipline, and dedication will continue to inspire generations of sports writers.”he said

The chairman, on behalf of the executive committee and members of the association, extend condolence to the immediate family of the deceased, his friends, colleagues and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He prayed that Almighty Allah to grants the deceased Aljanah Firdaus and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

The New Agency of Nigeria reports that Akintunde, who was also a Director of Programme Services at OgunTelevision (OGTV) died on Wednesday. (NAN)
