The Nigerian Navy says it is committed to the educational and health support of students in Cross River as part of its obligation to national development and human capacity building.

Capt. David Odu, Command Education Officer, Eastern Naval Command (ENC), said this on Tuesday in Calabar, during an educational and medical outreach as part of the Nigerian Navy 70th anniversary celebration.

Odu said that the outreach demonstrated the Nigerian navy’s enduring commitment to national development, human capacity building, and civil-military cooperation.

He noted that the initiative further aligned with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff to strengthen civil-military relations, and enhance the Nigerian navy’s contribution to national socio-economic development.

According to him, since its establishment in 1956, the Nigerian navy has remained steadfast in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities of defending the territorial integrity and maritime interests of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Beyond safeguarding our waters, the Nigerian navy has continuously extended humanitarian support and community development initiatives to Nigerians across the country.

“This outreach reflects the navy’s resolve to invest in the future of our nation through education and healthcare.

“The choice of schools for this initiative underscores our belief that the youth remain the backbone of national growth, security, and prosperity.”

On his part, Rear Adm. Chidozie Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the ENC, noted that education remained the most important weapon needed to change the world.

Okehie represented by Surgeon Cdr. Ahmadu Mohammed, Commander, Nigeria Navy Reference Hospital, Calabar, said that because of their importance, education and medical outreach were deliberately inculcated into the anniversary programme.

He admonished the students against social vices, especially illicit drugs.

“Just as we stressed the importance of education, without a healthy body, you can not learn better or be a better person.

“To parents and guardians of our children, we appreciate your tireless efforts in nurturing these young minds.

“Your sacrifices and dedication will continue to shape the moral and intellectual fabric of our society,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students were later engaged in hygiene and sex education talk by the Navy.

The event was concluded with the distribution of educational materials to the students who were selected from six different secondary schools in within Calabar metropolis.(NAN)
