A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 34-year-old businesswoman identified as Dogo, to two years imprisonment for defrauding her friend of N6.7m.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced the convict after she pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.
While delivering his judgment, Emmanuel said the essence of sentencing a defendant of a crime is to serve as a deterrent to others.
He however gave the convict an option of N200,000 fine and warned her to desist from crime.
He further ordered her to restitute the sum of N6.7m, to the complainant, Damaris John, being the money of the children’s clothes she collected.
He further ordered that in the event the convict failed to restitute the complainant, she shall serve an additional two year prison term.
Earlier, the Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometimes in January at Mahuta, Kaduna.
Leo said that the defendant collected children’s clothes valued at N6.7m from the complainant on the pretence that she would pay for the items after sales but thereafter defrauded her.
He said the defendant refused to return the items or pay for them and all effort made by the complainant to get her money back proved abortive.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.(NAN)
