A’Ibom: Police apprehend armed robbery suspect, recover firearm

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it has apprehended an armed robbery suspect within the Uyo Metropolis, and recovered a locally fabricated firearm in the process.

The Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, made the disclosure in a statement in Uyo on Monday

John said that the suspect was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation around the Mayflower axis, Oron Road, Uyo.

She said that the command received a distress call at about 10.30p.m on June 27 from a resident of Ikot Okubo, reporting the activities of suspected armed robbers.

The police image maker said that personnel from the command promptly mobilized to condone-off and ‘comb’ the affected area.

“Our personnel worked in collaboration with some members of the community to carry out the operation.

“In the process, a suspect was apprehended. A medium-sized locally fabricated firearm was found in his possession,” she said.

John said that upon sighting the police, other members of the criminal gang fled the scene.

She said that the command had already launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing suspects, and bring them to justice.

The police spokesperson further said that thorough investigation would be conducted to establish the suspect’s level of involvement in the alleged criminal activities.

“The investigation will also enable the police to identify and dismantle the criminal network,” she said.

John said that the command would continue to show commitment to the protection lives and property in the state.

She urged members of the public to always support the police with timely and credible information to ensure effective campaign against crime.(NAN).
