Prices for petrol and diesel have been reduced in India, as the people celebrate the Festival of Lights (Diwali) across the country.

The prices were reduced after the Idian Government announced a cut in excise duty on fuels on  Wednesday night.

Prices were reduced by over 5 Indian Rupees (nearly 6 U.S. cents) for petrol and nearly 12 Indian Rupees (nearly 16 U.S. cents) for diesel per litre on Thursday.

Over the past weeks, fuel prices had been consistently on the rise, leading to resentment among the public and severe criticism of the federal government from the opposition political parties.

After the reduction in prices, petrol will now cost nearly 104 Indian Rupees (around 1.39 U.S. dollars) and diesel will cost 86.70 Indian Rupees (nearly 1.16 U.S. dollars) per litre in Delhi.

Diwali is one of the major festivals celebrated by various religious groups in India and it usually last for five days. (Xinhua/NAN)
