Prof. Augustine Esogbue of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, US, has called on fellow scholars to embrace mentorship and scholarship to encourage students with passion for engineering but lacked adequate mentorship and financial support.

Esogbue made the call at a public lecture webinar organized by the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE) on Wednesday in Lagos.

The public lecture was entitled “The Engineering of Societal Systems: A Guided Tour of Decades of some Pioneering and Transformative Research Contributions“.

Esogbue announced a scholarship for doctoral studies for period of five years for selected institutions in each geo-political zone of Nigeria.

“I believe in mentoring younger generation because we need to give back to the society.

“The scholarship has to be Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-focused; we want to have products who can relate with industry,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Alex Ogedengbe, President, Nigeria Academy of Engineering, said that the organization wished to promote excellence in the engineering profession with the invitation of Esogbue as the guest speaker.

Ogedengbe said Ogedengbe has recorded unique achievements, including winning the coveted Nigerian National Order of Merit Award (NNOM).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the objective of NAE public lecture is to provide a platform for fellows of the academy to share information, ideas and personal experiences in the engineering profession. (NAN)
