ABUJA – The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a stern call to the electorate and participating political parties involved in the upcoming re-run and bye-elections scheduled for February 3, 2024. The agency emphasises the need for good conduct both during and after the electoral exercises in the affected states.

In a statement released today by the Director, Public Relations & Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunaya, the DSS urged contending parties to abstain from any actions that could potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order. Politicians and their supporters were specifically instructed to strictly adhere to the electoral act and procedures governing the elections.

Beyond the electoral process, the DSS appealed to citizens to exhibit patriotism and loyalty to the Nigerian nation. The agency called on public commentators, social critics, and key players in the public sphere to prioritise the peace of the country over personal or group interests.

Likewise, the DSS encouraged the media, civil society, and community-based organisations to avoid engaging in divisive tendencies and spreading fake narratives that could undermine national order. Emphasising the importance of a stable country for pursuing legitimate businesses and ambitions, the DSS advised against any subversive activities and warned that defaulters, regardless of their stature, would face the full weight of the law.

The DSS pledged to collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other security and law enforcement agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure a smooth and trouble-free election process. The agency assured the public that it would continue to implement proactive measures to achieve the desired stability in the country as part of its mandate.
