Lagos, Nigeria In a bid to foster community engagement and celebrate the unifying spirit of football, the Lagos State Government has established a mega viewing centre for the upcoming Super Eagles/Bafana Bafana match on Wednesday, February 7. The iconic Onikan Stadium, now Mobolaji Johnson Arena, has been designated as the Mega Viewing Centre for the highly anticipated clash, kicking off at 6 p.m.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, emphasised Lagos’ status as the sports capital and the epicentre of the Super Eagles’ support. Governor Babajide Olusola-Sanwo-Olu’s decision to set up twenty-five viewing centres across the state reflects a commitment to ensuring all Lagosians, irrespective of age or background, can partake in the excitement.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s prospects, citing the team’s impeccable record in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they remain unbeaten.
He reminisced about Nigeria’s glorious football history, boasting three AFCON titles, four runner-up finishes, and eight third-place achievements.
Apart from the Mega Viewing Centre at Onikan, the state has designated multiple venues, including Agege Stadium, Abesan Sports Centre, and Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, among others, to accommodate football enthusiasts.
With football serving as a potent unifier, the establishment of these viewing centres underscores Lagos State’s commitment to inclusivity and communal celebration.
