A 32-year-old man, Ayegbusi Yemi, was on Wednesday docked in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing an AK-47 rifle from the Police.
The police charged Yemi, whose address was not stated, with theft.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Elijah Adejare, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 21 at about 10p.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
Adejare alleged that the defendant stole an AK-47 rifle bearing serial number KO35-357532 and 30 rounds of live ammunition worth five million Naira from Insp. Musa Saliu, property of the Nigeria Police Force.
The prosecutor said that the defendant was arrested by the police.
According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 302(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State,2021.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Gbenga Ariyibi, prayed the court to admit Yemi to bail, promising that he will not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, admitted the defendant to bail with two sureties.
Magistrate Awosika ordered that one of the sureties must be a relative, who has landed properties.
She adjourned the case until June 21, for hearing.(NAN)
