Kaduna, Oct.29,2025(NAN) The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ), Kaduna State chapter on Wednesday paid a visit to the female wing of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kaduna and donated some essential items to the inmates.
The Chairman of the association, Hajiya Sahura Maidoki, said that the purpose of the visit was to show care and love to the inmates while listening to their individual stories and amplifying their voices.
She explained that essential items like detergents, tissue papers, diapers and slippers were donated to the women to keep themselves clean and give them a sense of belonging.
Maidoki added that members of the association would write stories informing the government and the relevant stakeholders on the problems faced by the female inmates especially those awaiting trial.
“We have met them and heard their stories, we would collaborate with relevant stakeholders like the FIDA to advocate to the government to come to their aid especially those with cases of debts,” she said.
While speaking, Assistant Controller, Lawal Talle, commended the association for the visit, saying that such action makes the inmates to feel important and not neglected.
He stated that the centre was there to reform offenders, adding that inmates’ health and welfare were being taken care of, with most of them learning different skills and others pursuing their education through the open University.
He, however, lamented the congestion in the facility, saying the centre houses 1,578 inmates as against its initial capacity to keep only 547.
Talle explained that 1,197 inmates out of the total number of inmates were awaiting trial, urging the media to report issues around custodial centres so as to enhance services.(NAN)(
