UNILORIN graduate wins double prestigious awards

A graduate of postgraduate schools in applied geophysics of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Mr. Okekeoguegbe Nnaemeka, has won two prestigious awards from the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS).

 

This is contained in a letter sent to the awardee by NGMS and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun.

 

“The Chairman of the Awards Committee of NMGS, Dr. Godwin Alo, informed the awardee that he would receive the awards along with cash prizes on Feb. 19, at the 60th Anniversary of NMGS.

.

“The first award, the NMGS Professor Charles Ofoegbu Prize, was for the best graduating M.Sc. student in geophysics, measured by the highest CGPA.

 

“The second award, the NMGS/Agip Energy Prize, was given for the best M.Sc. thesis in the area of mineral exploration for the 2024/2025 set,” he said.

 

Akogun stated that Okekeoguegbe won the NMGS/Agip Prize award for his thesis, titled ‘Geophysical Investigation of Spodumene and Tantalite Mineralization Part of Lafiagi Sheet 203 using Magnetic and Radiometric Methods.’.

 

He said that the achievement was as a result of the adequate utilization of the $1.5 million AspenTech Inc. USA grant, won by two lecturers in the department of geophysics of the university in 2024.

 

“Okekeoguegbe’s research work benefitted tremendously from software provided via the grant.

 

“His achievement is not just a flash in the pan, but also the reputation of Unilorin as a repository of awards for quality learning, research, and extracurricular activities.

 

“The vice-chancellor and the entire management of UNILORIN congratulate Mr. Ed Okekeoguegbe on making the institution proud and wish him more globally acclaimed achievements,” the director said. (NAN)
