The police on Tuesday, charged two people, Emmanuella Chiedozie and  Daniel Ernest before a Dutse Magistrates’ court in Abuja, over alleged conspiracy and stealing.

The defendants are standing trial on charges bordering on criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, theft, being in possession of items believed to have been stolen, assisting in concealment of stolen property and cheating.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor,  O.j Okpa told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 16.

He alleged that a shop owner, one Esther Mojisola of Deidei, Abuja, reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station.

According to him, the first defendant who worked as a sales representative in Mojisola’s shop, was supposed to remit proceeds of sales to to a specific bank account through the shop’s Point of Sales (POS) machine.

Okpa further alleged that the defendant instead, connived with the second defendant to misappropriate and divert the sum of two million naira, into a Moniepoint account bearing the name ‘Daniel Michael Ernest’.

The defendants were also alleged to have conspired to steal other items from the complainant s shop.

The prosecutor alleged that during investigation, some of the stolen items were found in the possession of the second defendant.

He told the court that both defendants could not give satisfactory accounts of their actions.

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 97, 288, 314, 318(a), 319 and 321 of the Penal Code.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Alkali admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of two million naira each, with two sureties each in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must have reliable means of identification and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The court adjourned the matter until July 22, for hearing.(NAN)
