A 26-year-old man, Wisdom Ifeanyi, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged sexual assault.
Ifeanyi, of Lekki area in Lagos, is facing a one-count charge bordering on sexual assault by penetration.
The Prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ikhayere told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 28, at the Place Hotel in Lagos within the Ikeja Magisterial District.
She alleged that the defendant sexually assaulted a 27-year-old woman by forcefully penetrating her.
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 261 stipulates life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of rape.
The defendant’s plea was not immediately recorded.
The Magistrate, Mr Lateef Owolabi, ordered that the defendant be remanded pending further proceedings from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The case was adjourned until June 18, for continuation of hearing.
