The Borno State Government said it had concluded arrangement to train 18,000 youths in various trades and vocation as part of efforts to combat youth restiveness in the state.

Gov. Kashim Shettima stated this on Thursday in Maiduguri at the launching of the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP) training for about 1000 Borno youths.

Shettima, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Zanna Mustapha, said the beneficiaries would comprise members of the youths vigilante groups, as well as other unemployed youths in the state.

He said the beneficiaries would undergo basic orientation course before being exposed to skills and vocational training.

Shettima said that at the end of their training, some of them  would be employed as waste or security managers, while others would be assisted with tools to set up their own businesses.

He said that the objective of the gesture was to fight unemployment and poverty, as well as curb social vices in the state.

In his speech, Prof. Longmas Wapmuk, the Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), organizers of the NISDP, said the participants would be trained in three different trades, namely welding,furniture-making and tailoring, to make them self reliant.

“We, in collaboration with the state government, have selected three trades for the trainees.

“These include welding, furniture-making and tailoring. It is expected that the trainees will start their own businesses upon completing the course,” he said.(NAN)
