Damaturu, March 24, 2026 (NAN) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) have cautioned against the spread of unverified information, noting that it could endanger humanitarian efforts and the safety of aid workers.
The two organisations were reacting to allegations of aiding armed groups in Northern Nigeria.
This is contained in a joint statement signed by Aliyu Dawobe, the ICRC Spokesperson, and Chima Nwankwo, NRCS Communications Coordinator on Tuesday.
“The allegations circulating on social media are misleading and contrary to the fundamental principles guiding their humanitarian operations.
“Such claims can undermine our work and deprive vulnerable populations of critical assistance across affected communities,” the two organisations said.
They said the activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are guided by principles of neutrality, independence, impartiality and transparency.
The organisations explained that their priority is to provide humanitarian support to people affected by crises, including armed conflict, without discrimination.
They clarified that while the ICRC engages in humanitarian dialogue with parties involved in conflicts to gain access to affected populations, it does not provide financial, logistical or any form of support to such groups.
They urged members of the public to verify information through credible and official sources, including their verified communication channels, before sharing or acting on such content.
The organisations also urged media practitioners and the public to direct enquiries to their official spokespersons for accurate information. (NAN)
