3 in court over alleged possession of Indian hemp

A 39-year-old woman, Olawole Toyin, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of Indian hemp.

Toyin was arraigned alongside two men, Folorunso Temidayo, 26, and Mohammed Sanni, 25.

They are facing a one-count charge of possession of Indian hemp.

The prosecutor, Insp Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 20 at about 5.45 p.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants were found in possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

Apata said the offence contravened Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendants, Mrs Adunni Olanipekun, urged the court to grant them bail, assuring that they would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N20,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 26 for hearing. (NAN)
