Security guard bags 8 strokes of cane for stealing umbrellas

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, ordered that a 29-year-old security guard, Micheal Nanfang be given eight strokes of the cane for stealing umbrellas.

The convict who resides at Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna, works at a school known as Mercy Academy in Kaduna.

He was arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel handed down the verdict following his guilty plea.

“For the offence of theft , you are hereby sentenced to eight strokes of cane,” He said.

He further warned the convict to desist from committing crime, stating that the court will not be lenient with him next time.

The court held that the verdict will serve as deterrence to others who may want to commit the same offence

The court ordered that the recovered umbrellas be returned to the owner.

Before his sentence, the convict had pleaded for leniency, urging the court to temper justice with mercy.

He had said “I don’t know what came over me and i promise i won’t repeat it anymore,”

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that a complainant one Mr Daniel Ishaku of Malali Kaduna had reported the matter at the Police Station.

Leo said the convict, who is the security guard at a school where the complainant teaches, went into the headmaster’s office and stole five umbrellas.

He added that the convict was also in the habit of bringing strangers to the school without permission.

According to him, during police investigation, the umbrellas were recovered.

The offence contravenes the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017.(NAN)
