A Bauchi-based ophthalmologist, Dr Hajara Isah, has advised people above 40 years, to undergo routine eye examinations and sight tests to improve their health.

She said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Bauchi on Monday.

Isah, a consultant ophthalmologist, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, said that eye ailments persist due to negligence until serious complications.

She highlighted that the eye is among the most important body organs that requires proper care and regular medical attention.

The expert said some eye diseases could only be detected through screening, citing glaucoma as an example.

“Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief of sight because it develops gradually without obvious symptoms.

“Although glaucoma can be managed when detected early, blindness resulting from the disease is irreversible,” she said.

She urged people with a family history of eye diseases and those living with diabetes to make regular visits to eye specialists a priority.

Isah also identified cataract as one of the leading causes of blindness, and advised those experiencing cloudy vision to seek prompt medical attention.

“Cataract treatment is simple and effective when handled by qualified professionals.

“Patients should avoid self medication and the use of unapproved traditional eye remedies.

“You should avoid buying over-the-counter drugs or patronizing hawkers who sell traditional eye medications,” she said.

Isah also identified conjunctivitis as a highly contagious viral eye infection that spreads easily if not properly managed.

She cautioned against applying substances such as salt and onion water, and other mixtures into infected eyes.

“We often see patients who use harmful substances while treating conjunctivitis. Use clean cotton wool or tissue to gently clean the eyes and seek medical advice when necessary,” she said.

The expert further warned against purchase of glasses from vendors without proper prescription from qualified eye specialists.

“For those using sunglasses, ensure they have ultraviolet protection markings to prevent damage to the eyes.

“Healthy lifestyle is recommended including eating balanced diets rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly foods containing Vitamin A.

“Avoid excessive exposure to dust, smoke and direct sunlight, maintain proper hand hygiene before touching your eyes, and reduce prolonged screen exposure by taking regular breaks,” she said.

According to Isah, preventive eye care is effective in reducing avoidable blindness and preserving good vision. (NAN)
