Mr. Ifeanyi Egwunyenga, the Commissioner for Youths Development in Delta, has urged corps members to build on the entrepreneurial skills they acquired during their orientation course.
Egunyenga made the plea on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General Sports and Cultural Fiesta, holding at the Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku.
According to him, the essence is to emphasise on what NYSC scheme stands for, which is national integration and the ability to help people cross breed ideas.
“Whatever you are doing here is geared toward national integration, build relationships and make sure you keep contacts, because you do not know where you will meet them.
“Within the timeframe of your service year, get a skill, develop new capacities; because you will never know when it will be useful to enhance yourself, your family and the society at large,” Egunyenga said.
Also, the NYSC Coordinator in Delta, Mr Olusegun Alao, urged corps members participating in the fiesta to take advantage of the NYSC scheme to promote the nation’s unity and integration.
”As corps members from different and diverse ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, you must play your roles well to promote national unity and integration.
“I encourage you to ensure healthy interactions, exchange ideas that will broaden your understanding of the country and build lasting friendships,” Alao advised.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the festival is aimed at sharpening the sporting skills of corps members and ability to learn about the cultural backgrounds of other tribes.
The festival is holding simultaneously across the six geopolitical zones.
Those states competing in Delta Zone include: Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Osun, Rivers and Bayelsa; corps members from these states will be competing in football, volleyball, track events (athletics), dance, drama, and comedy.
Winners of the preliminary stage will qualify for the finals, which will be held in Abuja at a later date.(NAN)
