Edo chief arrested over missing police rifle

police_officers_0The traditional of Sasaro in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state is currently a guest in the state Command headquarters of the
Nigeria police over allegations that a police rifle allegedly taken from a policeman attached to some expatriate workers in the area was
found in his bedroom.

Trouble was said to have started on Tuesday when a native of the
sleepy community who works for a quarry in the area owned by a
Lebanese consortium drowned as he was swimming in a river near their place of work.
 His employers said to be Lebanese were said to have gone to the
community to report the incident when youths pounced on them, beating the two policemen attached to the expatriates and in the process
seized one of the rifles.

The policemen were said to have called for reinforcement to rescue
them and the expatriates workers.

News men gathered that in the course of searching for the missing gun, it was discovered in the monarch’s bedroom. He was
immediately arrested and taken to Igarra police station for questioning from where he was transferred to the state command of the for further interrogation.

It will be recalled that few years ago, some youths from Igarra, headquarters of the local government were beaten and detained in Sasaro for visiting a disputed land between the two communities. It took the intervention of the Otaru, king of Igarra before they released.

When contacted, the newly posted Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Stephen Onwochei said he would get the full details but a senior police officer in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed the development.
