Mauricio Pochettino faced heightened challenges as Chelsea succumbed to a dismal 4-2 defeat against Wolves, marking their second consecutive loss after a 4-1 thrashing by Liverpool earlier in the week. The Premier League clash took centre stage ahead of Liverpool’s crucial match against title rival Arsenal.
The Premier League clash on Sunday showcased Chelsea’s woes, with furious fans booing the team off the pitch after Matheus Cunha’s hat-trick secured a second consecutive loss.
Currently positioned in 11th place, Chelsea’s challenging week started with a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool and ended on a sour note as Wolves completed a double over the struggling West Londoners.
Chelsea took an early lead in the 19th minute when Cole Palmer, with a composed finish from Moises Caicedo’s pass, found the back of the net. However, their advantage was short-lived, as Cunha’s shot, deflected off Thiago Silva, beat Blues’ keeper Djordje Petrovic, levelling the score.
In the 43rd minute, Pochettino’s frustration grew when Rayan Ait Nouri’s shot deflected off Chelsea’s Axel Disasi for an own goal. The toxic atmosphere escalated in the 63rd minute as Pedro Neto set up Cunha for the Wolves’ third goal.
A penalty awarded to Cunha in the 82nd minute, following a foul by Malo Gusto, further compounded Chelsea’s misery. Although Silva scored a late goal in the 86th minute, it offered little consolation to Pochettino.
The former Tottenham boss is under growing pressure as Chelsea’s dismal season unfolds. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, known for his decisiveness, had previously sacked Graham Potter after a brief seven-month stint last season.
With challenging fixtures against Aston Villa and Manchester City in their next three games, Chelsea faces the risk of further turmoil before the League Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on February 25. Pochettino’s future at the club hangs in the balance as calls for his dismissal intensify unless there is a swift turnaround in results.
