FG to make NYSC revenue-generating agency - Minister

February 5, 2024: The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced ambitious plans to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the aim of transforming it into a revenue-generating agency. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, the Minister of Youth Development, revealed these intentions during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

Minister Bio-Ibrahim emphasised that the planned reforms are designed to align the NYSC scheme with the current realities of the nation. Acknowledging the challenges posed by dwindling resources, she underscored the government’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to ensure the welfare of corps members.

“The reforms will transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare the corps members for the job market and to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship, with all the support they need in that career path,” stated Minister Bio-Ibrahim.

In response to the prevailing insecurity in the country, the minister mentioned that corps members would no longer be posted to states deemed unsafe. This decision reflects a heightened awareness of the security concerns facing young graduates participating in the NYSC programme. Minister Bio-Ibrahim emphasised that ensuring the security of corps members necessitates collaborative efforts with other government agencies.

The proposed reforms signal a shift towards financial sustainability for the NYSC, aiming to equip young Nigerians with skills for the job market and entrepreneurship while generating revenue to support the program’s objectives.
