IWO, Nigeria – The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbduraRasheed Akanbi, has boldly declared his immunity against kidnapping or assassination attempts by underworld elements, citing his reliance on divine protection rather than traditional deities.
In a statement to journalists at his palace, the monarch emphasised his faith in the Almighty God for safeguarding him from harm, urging fellow traditional rulers to follow suit and eschew dependence on deities.
“I am telling you right here that no one would dare attempt to kidnap or mark me for assassination,” declared Oba Akanbi. “I am covered by God’s protection, not any deity or gods.”
He underscored the importance of traditional rulers placing their trust in divine providence rather than relying on traditional practices, which he believes may tarnish the honour of their thrones.
The Oluwo of Iwo’s assertions come in the wake of recent tragic incidents, including the assassinations of the Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba David Ogunsola, as they returned from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Additionally, the Koro of Olukoro, General Segun Aremu (retd), in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, was killed in his palace, with his wife abducted.
The incidents have heightened concerns over the security of traditional rulers and the need for enhanced protection measures in the face of rising threats.
