Dakar, February 17, 2024 – Senegalese President Macky Sall affirmed on Friday his commitment to uphold a court decision overturning the postponement of the presidential election to December this year, signalling an end to the electoral uncertainty that gripped the nation.
Sall assured that he would promptly engage in consultations to organise the presidential election in Senegal at the earliest opportunity, following a bill that sought to delay the poll from its original date of February 25. The decision to postpone the election was nullified by Senegal’s Constitutional Council on Thursday after it deemed the move unconstitutional.
In response to the council’s ruling, the presidency released a statement on Friday, acknowledging Sall’s acceptance of the decision and his readiness to abide by it. The statement emphasised Sall’s intention to fully comply with the Constitutional Council’s directive to conduct the election without delay.
The reversal of the postponement comes amidst mounting pressure on Sall to adhere to the court ruling amid concerns over political stability and democratic principles in Senegal. The week-long electoral crisis sparked violent protests and drew condemnation from both domestic and international stakeholders, including opposition leaders, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and foreign powers such as the United States and France.
Sall, who had previously declared his decision not to seek a third term, faced criticism for attempting to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally prescribed limit. His announcement to delay the election, citing disputes over the candidate list and allegations of corruption within the Constitutional Council, stirred controversy and raised doubts about the integrity of the electoral process. However, the council refuted the accusations levelled against it by Sall, according to Reuters.
The resolution of the electoral impasse is seen as a pivotal moment for Senegal’s democratic governance and sets the stage for a renewed focus on conducting free, fair, and transparent elections in accordance with constitutional provisions.
