Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advised the 3,250 corps members posted to the state to acquire necessary skills to be self-reliant, innovative, and economically empowered after the service year.
The governor gave the advice at the opening of the 2026 Batch B Stream II Orientation Course of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Friday in Iseyin.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Makinde was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr Sunday Moradeyo.
The governor encouraged corps members to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme of scheme wholeheartedly.
“The future belongs to those who are prepared, and the programme is designed to prepare you for the life after NYSC.
“Oyo State is known for its rich history, hospitality, cultural diversity, and peaceful coexistence,
“The government has deliberately created an enabling environment for corps members to live, work, and serve safely,
“I assure you that this administration will continue to prioritize your welfare, security, and well-being throughout your service year,
“As you proceed with your mandatory one-year national service journey, I charge you to be good ambassadors of your families, institutions, states of origin, and the NYSC scheme,
“Be disciplined, law-abiding, and respectful of the customs and traditions of your host communities.
“Avoid acts capable of tarnishing your image or undermining the objectives of the scheme,” Makinde said.
He urged the corps members to serve with sincerity, courage, and hope.
Makinde urged the corps members to believe in Nigeria, believe in themselves and believe that their contributions, no matter how little, can make a lasting difference.
In her remarks, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Kayode Peters, charged the corps members to approach their service year with a sense of responsibility, commitment, and selflessness.
He advised the corps members to participate actively in all camp activities, obey instructions, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations.
“The orientation course serves as the foundation upon which a successful and rewarding service year is built.
“I therefore urge you to approach every aspect of the programme with seriousness, enthusiasm, discipline, and an open mind.
“The lessons you learn, the relationships you build, and the experiences you gain will not only prepare you for a successful service year, but also empower you to contribute meaningfully to the realization of a stronger, more united, peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
“The experiences you acquire, during the service year have the potential to shape your future, broaden your horizons, and strengthen your commitment to national development and selfless service.” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice Bayo Taiwo, administered the Oath of Allegiance to the 3,250 corps members. (NAN)
