Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a suspected illegal bunkering site in Lagos State, and arrested six suspects in what authorities described as a major blow against crude oil theft and economic sabotage.
The intelligence-led operation, carried out by troops of the 65 Battalion under the 81 Division Nigerian Army, targeted a suspected illegal bunkering facility in the Orile area of Lagos, where security operatives recovered trucks, pumping equipment and other materials allegedly used in the illicit operation.
Military authorities said the raid was conducted following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected oil thieves operating within the area.
According to the Army, troops stormed the site under the leadership of the Commanding Officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel S. Adeojo, leading to the arrest of six suspected bunkerers and the recovery of several items believed to have been used for illegal petroleum activities.
Recovered exhibits included four trucks, a pumping machine, and assorted pipes and drums, which security officials believe formed part of the infrastructure supporting the illegal operation.
The operation highlights the continued efforts by security agencies to curb illegal bunkering, a criminal enterprise that has for years deprived Nigeria of substantial oil revenue and contributed to environmental degradation in oil-producing communities.
Illegal bunkering remains one of the country’s most persistent economic crimes, with criminal networks often siphoning petroleum products through unauthorized channels for illegal refining and distribution.
Following the operation, the Army said all arrested suspects and recovered items were handed over to the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Commending the troops for the successful operation, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola, praised the officers and soldiers for their professionalism and commitment.
He urged security personnel to sustain ongoing operations against economic sabotage and other criminal activities within the division’s area of responsibility.
The Army also reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national assets and supporting efforts aimed at strengthening security and safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests.
The latest raid comes amid renewed efforts by security agencies to dismantle illegal oil theft networks across the country as authorities intensify the fight against crimes that threaten Nigeria’s petroleum sector and national revenue.
