The Asaba Drug Rehabilitation Centre is set to commence operations following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the palace of the Asagba of Asaba and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the centre was established to tackle drug addiction among youths and other residents through treatment, counselling and rehabilitation services.
Leading a delegation to the palace on Tuesday, the Medical Director of FMC, Asaba, Dr Ekeneam Omo, described the initiative as timely and pledged the hospital’s unwavering commitment to its success.
Omo commended the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, and members of the Drug Rehabilitation Committee for confronting drug abuse, describing their efforts as a genuine concern for vulnerable youths.
He assured the traditional ruler of the hospital’s support, adding that the centre would be driven by professional medical services to realize its objectives.
In his response, the Asagba described the partnership as noble and commendable, appreciating the FMC and committee members for joining efforts to address the growing challenge of substance abuse.
Azinge noted that rising cases of drug abuse and trafficking necessitated the establishment of the centre, stressing that affected individuals require structured treatment, counselling and opportunities for recovery.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration would strengthen rehabilitation efforts, enabling recovering patients to regain confidence and reintegrate into society through sustained medical care and psychological support.
The traditional ruler urged the medical team and committee members to remain committed, emphasizing the need for dedication, proper planning and sustained collaboration among key stakeholders.
Azinge further revealed that the community was addressing the root causes of drug abuse by creating employment opportunities for youths and promoting strong moral values through responsible family upbringing.
He also disclosed that Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori had been briefed on the initiative, expressing confidence that the centre would serve both indigenes and non-indigenes across Delta.

Following the signing, Azinge described the development as the beginning of a partnership that would grow and endure, expressing confidence in the long-term success of the rehabilitation initiative.(NAN).
