Abuja, Feb. 20, 2026 (NAN) The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has expressed profound appreciation to the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force for the swift and decisive intervention during the Benin attack.
The appreciation followed a mob attack on RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office of the FRSC on the Benin–Lagos Expressway on Thursday.
A statement by the FRSC spokesman, Olusegun Ogungbemide on Friday in Abuja, quoted Mohammed as describing the incident as unfortunate.
The Corps Marshall explained that the attack occurred after a crash scene rescue operation around the Benin Toll Gate axis, involving two trucks that reportedly collided.
The statement said that the accident resulted in the death of one of the truck drivers and critical injuries to FRSC personnel.
He added that one of the officers later succumbed to injuries despite urgent medical attention.
“In the aftermath of the crash, an angry mob besieged and vandalised the Unit Command formation.
“However, prompt response by security agencies, helped to restore order and prevent further escalation,” Mohammed said.
The Corps Marshal condemned the attack on its personnel and facilities, describing it as deeply regrettable and unacceptable.
He restated that FRSC operatives were on lawful duty to save lives when the tragic crash occurred.
Mohammed also commiserated with the families of the driver, the fallen officer and the entire FRSC workforce
The Corps Marshal also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote cause of the crash as well as the circumstances that led to the mob action.
He assured the public that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The FRSC boss reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians and called on the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of its activities in this regard. (NAN)
