Beijing, Feb. 4, 2026 (Xinhua/NAN) China urges Japan to reflect on history of aggression, adhere to peaceful development
China on Wednesday urged Japan to deeply reflect on its history of aggression and remain committed to the path of peaceful development, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
Spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning a possible constitutional revision to explicitly recognise Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.
“During World War II, Japanese militarism brought tremendous suffering to the people of the region and the world,” Lin said.
He noted that a series of international legal instruments, including the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, clearly defined Japan’s international obligations.
The obligation as a defeated country and constituted the political and legal basis for its return to the international community.
Lin said this is why any move by Japan to amend its constitution has drawn close attention from the international community and its Asian neighbours.
He called on Japan to heed the voices of its people who seek peace and oppose war, adhere to peaceful development, and earn the trust of its Asian neighbours.
He also called on the international community through concrete actions. (Xinhua/NAN)
