Abuja, July 25, 2025 (NAN) The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has announced the creation of a new register to formally recognise and regulate other key players in the building industry, including building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday in Abuja, CORBON Chairman, Dr , said the initiative aimed to promote professional growth, ensure quality control, and enhance career development for the cadres within Nigeria’s construction sector.

Opaluwah noted that while more than 4,000 builders had been registered since CORBON’s establishment under Decree 45 of 1989, the support personnel they worked with, such as craftsmen and technicians, had not previously been formally recognised.

He emphasised that the professionals played critical roles on construction sites and deserved proper recognition and inclusion within the regulatory framework of the building industry.

“These building technicians and artisans form the bulk of private sector practitioners.

“Unfortunately, they’ve lacked proper recognition and opportunities for growth. That’s about to change,” he said.

He explained that the new register, approved at the last council meeting, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and introduced a framework for regulating and certifying all practitioners on building sites.

“CORBON will now recognise the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) as part of its registration processes, allowing practitioners to progress through levels of certification, from entry-level to expert.

“The NSQF was approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2013 as a certification and licensing standard for the informal sector.

“This new system accommodates professionals from both the formal and informal sectors.

“If you have the skill and competence, we will register you and provide a path for advancement,” Opaluwah said.

He said employers would benefit from a more transparent and reliable benchmark for recruitment, evaluation, and staff development, while regulatory agencies would gain improved capacity for oversight, enforcement, and collaboration.

He added that governments would have better data collection and management of available skills, and society at large would benefit from improved accessibility, safety, quality, and professionalism in housing delivery.

Opaluwah also announced that a call for applications for registration would be made in due course.

He encouraged all building technologists, technicians, and craftsmen to take advantage of the new registration opportunities to formalise their roles in the sector. (NAN)
