Abuja, Jan. 28, 2026 (NAN) The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCNS), has cautioned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs and condemned all violations of its national sovereignty.

The council’s President, Sheikh Bashir Aliyu-Umar said this at the annual Pre-Ramadan lecture and General Assembly organised by the council on Wednesday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the event is ” Nigeria’s Future: Faith, Justice and Leadership.”

Aliyu-Umar said the council frowned at any attempt to establish a foreign military base on Nigerian soil.

“Our position has consistently been anchored on justice, equity, and the Islamic obligation to mitigate hardship and unfair burden on the citizenry.

“In response to the concern and helplessness of our people on persistent insecurity and terrorism across the country, ” he said.

The cleric said that the council intensified its advocacy for the institutionalisation of peaceful reconciliation as a core pillar of non-kinetic peacebuilding.
Aliyu-Umar noted that the council unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and urged the government to fulfil its constitutional duty to protect every Nigerian life.

“At the same time, the council has unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms, reaffirming that every human life, Muslim or Christian, is sacred and inviolable.”

He urged the government to live up to its divine and constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives, property, and dignity of all Nigerians without discrimination.
The cleric cautioned against misleading and inflammatory propaganda and narratives portraying the security challenges facing Nigeria that affects everyone as genocide against a particular religion or people.
He stressed the need for honesty, balance, and responsibility in public
discourse to prevent deepening mistrust, polarisation, and national instability.(NAN)
