An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of two men – Joel Okoro, 25 and Emeka Chukweze, 22, charged with attempting to rob with a toy gun
Magistrate Mrs. I.O. Raji, who did not take the defendants’ plea, ordered that they should be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
She, however, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The magistrate adjourned the case until Feb. 16 for DPP’s advice.
The police charged the duo, residents of Ajah area of Lagos State, with a three-count of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and attempted robbery.
The Prosecution Counsel Insp. Mojirade Edeme, told the court that the defendants and others still at large committed the offences in November 2021 at Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos State.
She said that the defendants, who belonged to an unlawful society known as ‘Aro-Bagger’ confraternity, attempted to rob Mr. Augustine Ogona.
“The defendants entered the complainant’s shop with the pretext of buying goods and in the process; they pointed a toy gun at him, demanding for his money.
“The complainant raised alarm, the defendants took to their heels, people pursued them and they were apprehended,” the prosecutor said.
The alleged offences violate Sections 42, 298 and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 42 attracts three years’ imprisonment for belonging to an unlawful society while section 298 prescribes 14 years for attempted robbery.(NAN).
