An Anambra  Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Offences Court in  Awka, on Thursday ordered the remand of a 46-year-old man, Chima Onyeanuna, for  allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

Onyeanuna, a member of a Vigilance group, is facing a one-count charge of defilement.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Chinyere Okechukwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between 2025 and May 31, 2026, at Umuezejiofor, Amakwo village, in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area  (LGA) of the state.

Okechukwu said the girl usually ran to the defendant’s house whenever she had issues with her parents and that he would harbor her and allegedly defile her.

She said the matter was reported after the girl’s father discovered the incident.

The prosecutor added that a medical examination conducted at the Ntasi Sexual Assault Referral Centre, General Hospital, Enugu-Ukwu, confirmed that the girl had been defiled.

Okechukwu said the offence contravened Section 34(2) of the state’s Child Rights Law, 2004.

She prayed the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility, pursuant to Section 130(2)(a)(b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2022.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs U.E. Onochie, ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Awka correctional facility and adjourned the case until Aug. 5 for hearing. (NAN).
