At least eight traders lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries during a terrorist attack on a convoy heading to the Yantumaki weekly market in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State, northwest Nigeria.
The assailants, identified as terrorists, opened fire on the convoy of vehicles on Friday morning, leaving eight traders dead on the spot. The wounded individuals are currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital, as confirmed by Kabiru Dangaye, the chairman of the drivers union in the region.
The deteriorating security situation in the North-western region, particularly in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states, has turned many federal, state, and local highways into perilous routes, with terrorists targeting travelers.
Concerns about safety have prompted local communities to adopt defensive measures, such as driving in convoys with military or police escorts to mitigate the risk of attacks.
According to Mr. Dangaye, the convoy in question waited for other drivers and traders from neighboring communities before commencing the journey. They had requested military escort, and the soldiers were present in one of the vehicles.
The tragic ambush occurred near Makera, with terrorists organized in four groups. When the soldiers attempted to respond, the attackers, being numerous and strategically positioned, gained the upper hand.
A distress call brought the Community Watch Corps to the scene, providing additional support along with more soldiers to assist the traders in need.
Usman Abdulmuminu, a resident of Maidabino, expressed deep sorrow, revealing that most of the victims were from his community. He noted that aside from the fatalities, many others sustained severe injuries, heightening the sense of mourning in the affected communities.
As of the time of this report, efforts to reach the police spokesperson in Katsina State, Abubakar Sadik, were unsuccessful. The incident marks the second time within a month that local traders have been targeted in the state, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region.
Terrorist activities have plagued many states in the northwestern part of Nigeria for over a decade, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives. The recurring attacks underscore the persistent challenges faced by authorities in ensuring the safety of citizens in the region.
