A member of the Delta House of Assembly, Mrs Bridget Anyafulu, says democratic governance remains the best system for development, citizens’ rights, and national progress.
Anyafulu, who represents Oshimili South, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Asaba in the build up to Nigeria’s June 12 Democracy Day.
The lawmaker said June 12 remained a significant date in the nation’s history, symbolizing the struggle, sacrifices, and resilience of Nigerians in their quest for democratic governance.
According to her, democracy has provided citizens with opportunities to participate actively in governance and influence decisions affecting their lives.
She said unlike military rule, democracy guaranteed freedom of expression, respect for human rights, and accountability in public office.
“Democratic rule outweighs the militarization option because it gives the people a voice and allows leaders to emerge through the will of the electorate,” she said.
Anyafulu, who chairs the House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Support Services and Girl Child Development, noted that democracy has strengthened Nigeria’s institutions and enhanced citizens’ confidence in governance.
She explained that elected officials remained accountable to the people, unlike military administrations where decisions were largely imposed without public consultation.
According to her, democracy has encouraged transparency and opened governance to greater public scrutiny.
“Today, Nigerians can freely express their opinions, hold leaders accountable, and participate in the democratic process. These are gains that should never be taken for granted,” she said.
The lawmaker said democratic governance has also contributed significantly to food production and agricultural development across the country.
She noted that governments at different levels have introduced policies, intervention programmes, and support schemes aimed at improving food security and increasing agricultural productivity.
According to her, farmers now have platforms to engage government and advocate for policies that support agricultural growth.
She added that rural development initiatives implemented under democratic administrations have improved access to farmlands and markets.
“Democracy has created opportunities for farmers to benefit from government programmes, agricultural loans, improved seedlings, and extension services,” she stated.
Anyafulu said that although food inflation remained a challenge, democratic institutions provided avenues for citizens to demand better policies and improved agricultural investments.
She noted that continued investment in agriculture remains critical to reducing hunger, creating jobs, and boosting economic growth.
Speaking on Delta, the lawmaker said democracy has accelerated development through sustained investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and youth empowerment.
She commended Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori for implementing programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the people of Delta.
“The dividends of democracy are visible in our roads, schools, hospitals, and empowerment programmes. These are benefits that directly impact the lives of our people,” she said.
Anyafulu also highlighted the growing participation of women and youths in governance, describing it as one of democracy’s greatest achievements.
She said democratic rule has created opportunities for more inclusive leadership and broader representation in public institutions.
According to her, the increasing involvement of women in politics demonstrates the progress made under democratic governance.
The lawmaker urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and resist actions capable of undermining the nation’s democratic gains.
She urged leaders at all levels to prioritize good governance, transparency, and service to the people.
“Democracy is not just about elections. It is about ensuring that government works for the people and delivers meaningful development,” she said.
Anyafulu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying the country possesses enormous potential to achieve greater progress under a stable democratic system.
She urged citizens to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to national unity.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us strengthen our commitment to democratic values and continue working together to build a prosperous and united Nigeria,” Anyafulu said. (NAN)
