The driver of the vehicle, identified as Shola Oladimeji, who was pulled out from the water alive by some sympathisers, was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, according to the police.
Mr. Oladimeji, a resident of Abule Egba, Lagos, was the sole occupant in the vehicle.
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Unit Commander Lagos Island, Sadiq Abdulrahman, who confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES said the accident happened at the Adekunle junction of the bridge at about 10.30 a.m.
The FRSC official attributed the cause of the accident to overspeeding, adding that it took about an hour and 15 minutes for emergency response agencies to respond to the distress call to assist volunteers in rescuing the victim of the accident.
This is the first time a survivor has been brought out of a vehicle that skid off the third mainland bridge in five years.Â
