Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed doubt over the sincerity and commitment of the State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards the conduct of credible elections and therefore passed a “no confident vote” on the Commission.
The union also asked members to boycott the commission’s activities till further notice.
The resolution was reached after the State Resident Electoral Commission (REC) refused to show up at a one day seminar on a “Non-Violence Elections” for journalists in the State despite being officially invited for the event.
The seminar was organized by the Center for Peace & Environment Justice (CEPEJ) in collaboration with NUJ.
The State REC, Barrister Mike Igini was billed to make presentation on INEC’s preparedness for the 2015 general elections.
He however didn’t show up for the event or send representative. Edo State chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Desmond Agbama who handed out the stringent measure against the commission said the electoral body attitude towards the press is “unbecoming” of a responsible organization umpire.
“We have made series of proposals to INEC, they won’t reply or send representative.
“I think INEC is shying away from the press. So, it’s high time we tell them that they should be the ones looking for us,” Agbama added.
On his part, an Associate lecturer, Mass Communication department at the Delta State University, Dr. Emmanuel Ufuophu in a presentation: “Role of the Media in 2015 General Elections” said the press has remained the pillar of democracy and political stability.”
Emmanuel who was represented by the General Manager of Delta State Broadcasting Service urged the press to be courageous to condemn “any statements or act that is remotely or directly suggestive of provocative of political violence.”
