Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – Dr. Samuel Udonsak, the National President of the Ekid People’s Union (EPU), has alleged that BUA International Limited is unlawfully occupying Ekid land, emphasizing that the mining of Ilmenite without the community’s consent is also a breach of the law.
Addressing the yearly congress of the EPU, Udonsak called on the state government to adhere to the stipulations of the 1930 Stubbs Creek Reserve Ordinance, which established the Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve, known as Akoiyak. He clarified that the reserve was not an acquisition but held a reversionary interest for the Ekid people, as per the 1918 Privy Court judgment.
“There is no place in the Constitution and our laws that allow a government to acquire land and convert it into private use. It should always be for public good. It is on this basis that we hold that BUA is occupying our land illegally, just as the mining of Ilmenite on our land without our consent is also illegal,” emphasized Udonsak.
Reporting to the congress, Udonsak highlighted the continuous intimidation, kidnapping, and dispossession of Ekid people’s farms, tools, and fishing gear by Ibeno Local Council and its agents throughout the past year. He also noted the imposition of illegal taxes on residents of Esit Urua and those conducting legitimate business in the Stubbs Creek.
“They have made life unbearable for our people. Congress must mandate the union to take all legitimate means to free our people who have every right to live their life in peace and prosperity,” he demanded.
Turning to the proposed Ibom Seaport, Udonsak expressed optimism about the project’s potential to revolutionize the economy and life in Akwa Ibom State. He commended the government’s efforts in advancing the seaport project, signaling its significance for the region’s development.
