Ekiti council boss warns youths against sexual violence

Mr Sola Olominu, the Chairman of Ikole Local Government Council of Ekiti, has warned youths in the area to shun sexual violence and other social vices.

Olominu gave the warning on Tuesday in Ikole-Ekiti while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the rising cases of rape and gender-based violence.

The council boss said that the ugly development had become cause for worry in the area and in Nigeria in general.

He described rape and sexual violence as damaging to the image of the Nigerian youth.

Olominu said that the council had embarked on sensitisation in the area to fight against the phenomenon.

“The objective is to ensure the protection of the health and lives of the youths, especially the girl-child.

Olominu explained that he had been working with the community leaders toward the eradication of the unwholesome trend in the area.

He said that the council was also educating the youths on the dangers of rape and sexual violence.

The chairman warned that any youth caught indulging in sexual assaults, including rape, would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“We have commenced sensitisation against rape and all forms of sexual immorality in our society.

“Rape is a criminal offence  and an evil act that is punishable by the laws of Ekiti and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We have reached out to our youth leaders, market and community leaders, chiefs and traditional rulers for them to join hands with the council in the fight against sexual violence.

“We believe that with the cooperation of these people, such immoral acts would cease to happen in Ikole-Ekiti and communities around it.

“But after our sensitisation programmes,  anyone or persons caught raping teenagers, girl and boy child or indulge in any form of sexual violence against old women will be arrested and made to face the law,” Olominu said.
