There was panic in Enugu on Monday following an explosion which occurred at the home of an All Progressives Congress chieftain, in Amokwe in Udi Local Government Area of the state.
The explosion brought down the magnificent building belonging to top Enugu politician, Chief Emeka Eze, where it occured, as well as damaged many other buildings in the vicinity.
The heavy sound was heard as far as Ninth Mile Corners, Umumba town and environs, and other communities in Udi and Ezeagu Local Governments of the state. Residents also told our reporter that their houses shook at the foundations from the impact.
The incident threw residents and their relations into serious apprehension.
However, the Enugu State police command in a statement which doused the tension said the explosion was caused by fireworks packed in a building.
In the statement issued by the spokesperson of the command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, he said the police “have commenced a full scale investigation into an incident of explosion at Amokwe Udi in Udi local Government Area of Enugu State on 16/3/15 by 5pm, with a view to finding out the possible cause of the sudden explosion.
“Some of the injured have been taken to the hospitals just as men of the Explosive Ordinance Department of the Enugu State command have cordoned off the place with other operatives.
“Meanwhile, instant analysis of the incident by the operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Department on ground at the scene of the explosion revealed that it was occasioned by high calibre pyrotechnics, (fireworks) in a large quantity packed in the house of the owner that exploded.
“A trailer load of the said high calibre pyrotechnics, (fireworks) was brought into the house on 15/3/15,” the statement added.
But residents of the area said the sound was too heavy to that of mere fireworks. A trader who simply identified himself as Okonkwo said that it sounded like a bomb explosion, as no ordinary fireworks can be heard as far as Ninth Mile Corners, and also bring down such a large building.
Other residents of the state also expressed worry as the incident emanated from the home of a politician, as one warned that they(politicians) do not drive the nation into war.
