Enugu, Nigeria – Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has declared his unwavering commitment to the eradication of hunger and poverty in the state. This declaration comes as the administration focuses on prioritizing and unlocking the rural economy through investments in agriculture and agro-industrialization.
Speaking at an event organized by the State Ministry of Agriculture to mark the 2023 World Food Day, Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, emphasized that the state government is intensifying efforts to raise the economy from its current value of US$4.4 billion to an impressive US$30 billion through substantial investments.
“We will invest in agriculture by attracting investors, empowering farmers, and opening up the rural economy of the state,” Governor Mbah stated.
The governor commended the farmers for their dedication in producing a variety of food crops showcased at the event. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing farmers with robust support to boost the state’s economy.
“Farmers are the critical factors that will lead us to achieve economic prosperity and self-sufficiency and sustainability,” he emphasized. “Farming will play a pivotal role in our quest to grow the state’s economy. We are fully committed and determined to develop our economy for comparative advantage.”
Governor Mbah expressed optimism about the future, saying, “We want to guarantee food security, and we hope that by the time we gather here next year, there won’t be enough space for us to display our farm products.”
Addressing the event’s theme, “Water is life, water is food, and leave no one behind,” the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Mr. Patrick Ubru, highlighted the global significance of ‘World Food Day’ as a reminder of the need for food security.
Ubru underscored the pivotal role played by water as an integral component of food security and nutrition for all. He praised the governor’s relentless efforts in ensuring a consistent water supply in the state.
The commissioner explained that regular access to water empowers farmers to engage in year-round farming activities, increase crop yields, and diversify their agricultural pursuits. This diversification, in turn, enhances food production, contributes to rural development, poverty eradication, and improves livelihoods.
“As we celebrate World Food Day today, let us reflect on the positive strides we have taken in the provision of water and its impact on our agricultural landscape,” Ubru urged. “Let us recognize the transformative power of water in empowering our farmers and ensuring food security for all. It is a testament to the fact that when we prioritize the needs of our communities and work together, we can overcome even the most significant challenges.”
