(Quick News Africa)- The European Union (EU) at the weekend said it will partner with ten other entities, including Nigeria to draw attention to climate security challenges in the country, beginning from Wednesday, June 28 in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
The event in view, which ends on July 8, is part of the annual “European Climate Diplomacy Week” and will also advocate best practices in other critical areas, including food and water scarcity, renewable energy, wildlife, and environmental pollution.
The EU Delegation in Nigeria, the British High Commission, as well as the Embassies of Germany, France, Sweden and the Czech Republic are participating in the weeklong event.
Other partners are the French Institute, the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, One Environment, Stop Don’t Drop and recycling company, Chanja Datti.
They are all collaborating in the two-week programme to raise public awareness and promote policies and practices for a climate-resilient future.
This year’s event is a significant one, coming after the ratification in November 2016 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change by Nigeria and 147 other countries.
Climate Diplomacy Week is a global EU initiative to build relationships with key local actors from governments, business and civil society, and to promote the global transition to a low emissions, resilient and resource efficient economy.
A series of activities have been lined up to mark the Climate Diplomacy Week, beginning with a seminar on renewable energy/energy storage.
This will be followed by a photo exhibition on environmental pollution in the Niger Delta on Wednesday, June 28, marking the opening of the Climate Diplomacy Week.
Also, during a roundtable on food security in the Niger Delta at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre on Thursday June 29, experts, activists and policy stakeholders will explore effective solutions to the compounding effects of climate and environmental threats on food security in the Niger Delta.
The Climate Diplomacy Week will also feature workshops, panel discussions, movie screening, and a presentation on the youth summit on energy and agriculture.
There will also be seminars and roundtables, collection of recyclables, photo and art exhibitions, school engagements and debates, media engagement and innovation presentations.
