Expert cautions against cyberbullying, ICT abuse

An Information and Communications Technology (ICT) expert, Mr. Emeka Okonji, has warned Nigerians against engaging in cyberbullying and the misuse of ICT platforms for corrupt practices.

Okonji gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said that technology was designed to enhance communication, facilitate innovation, and improve the quality of life of people.

“Technology should serve as a tool for societal advancement, not a medium for fraud, cyberbullying, or other corrupt practices.

“ICT is meant to improve our lives and not for destruction. People should harness the internet for positive and constructive purposes rather than misusing it,” he said.

Okonji added that cyberbullying is becoming a growing concern as its practices are causing harm to individuals and communities across the globe.

“It has been noticed that some Nigerians, youths in particular, are engaging in cyberbullying to spread fake rumours and news, causing chaos online and tarnishing individual reputations, which can lead to communal unrest.

“Others use the internet unjustly to attack governments or individuals, resulting in societal instability,” Okonji said.

To curb the misuse of the ICT platform, Okonji called on governments to evolve measures to regulate the use of ICT.

The ICT expert also urged Nigerians to embrace digital technologies responsibly and use them for productive and positive endeavours. (NAN)
