Lagos, January 11, 2024Ā – Joseph Aloba, the father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.
Mohbad, a former protege of Azeez Fashola, widely recognized as Naira Marley, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 28 in Lagos State. The Lagos State Police Command initiated a 13-member special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to probe the mysterious demise of the young artiste.
Former Lagos Police Commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa, assured the public, “Everybody linked to it (the death of Mohbad) will be identified, and they will be brought to establish their level of involvement. We have unique access with INTERPOL.”
The death of Mohbad resulted in the arrest of Naira Marley, and controversial Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, aka Sam Larry, among others. On September 21, 2023, Mohbad’s body was exhumed for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, tweeted in September 2023 that the autopsy had been concluded, and the police were awaiting results.
However, Joseph Aloba, speaking on Trust TV on Wednesday, expressed his dissatisfaction with the police investigation. He revealed that he had not been provided with the autopsy report and expected the police to search Mohbad’s residence after he delivered the body to the police station.
“I am not satisfied with the police investigation. They should ask them questions. Through searching their phones, they would know what killed Mohbad. A lot of people were living with him. So I am not really satisfied with the investigation. We are still looking for justice. Delay can result in denial,” Aloba stated, appealing to the government to intensify efforts for a thorough investigation.
In November 2023, Hundeyin clarified that the command had not officially received the autopsy report, dispelling rumours about its completion.
Aloba, in November 2023, cautioned against anyone taking his son’s body for burial without his authorization, emphasizing his role in overseeing any activities related to Mohbad’s remains.
Hundeyin, in December 2023, reiterated the command’s stance, stating they were awaiting the official report from the pathologists who conducted the autopsy before concluding their investigation.
“We’re not the pathologists who carried out the autopsy. When they give us their report, we’ll conclude our investigation,” Hundeyin explained. “For now, that’s what we’re waiting for. We can’t guess; we need to get the report and see the content of the result, and we don’t have it yet.”
The delay in obtaining the autopsy report continues to fuel concerns and demands for transparency in the investigation into the untimely death of the promising Nigerian artiste.
