The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, has assured the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) adequate protection of all journalists.
This is contained in a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Monica Ojobi, on Wednesday, in Abuja.
According to the statement, the NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, made the pledge when members of NAWOJ paid him a courtesy visit.
Odumosu, while commending the journalists on their role in shaping society and promoting peace through responsible journalism, stressed that the media deserves adequate encouragement and support to thrive.
He disclosed that his appointment as focal point for UNESCO in Nigeria, will ensure the safety of journalists, especially women, which makes the visit timely and highly imperative.
“I will commence an advocacy campaign to educate security personnel on the need to protect journalists, especially women from harassment, brutality and intimidation in NSCDC ‘s capacity, as UNESCO Focal Point in Nigeria.
“Journalists are critical stakeholders and partners in any socio-political and economic setting.
“It is a thing of pride to support and encourage women taking centre stage in national developmental affairs.” Odumosu said.
The commandant decried the unfortunate incidents, where women journalists die in line of duty.
He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to providing security support to safeguard media professionals.
Responding, NAWOJ FCT Chapter, Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, commended Odumosu for his exemplary leadership, professionalism and commitment to inclusive policing in the FCT.
Ibrahim congratulated Odumosu on his appointment as the focal point for UNESCO in Nigeria, noting that the command under his watch has become more visible, responsive, and people-centered.
She stated that NAWOJ, as the voice of women in the media, is ready to collaborate with the NSCDC FCT command in sensitizing the public on security matters.
“We will also collaborate on tackling fake news and amplifying the achievements of the corps in protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure.
“We appreciate you for identifying with women journalists. Safety is not negotiable for us.
“This partnership with NSCDC and UNESCO gives us hope that the voices of women in the media will be heard as we carry out our constitutional duties,” she said.
The chairperson also commended women in security agencies especially the Female Strike Force of the corps, saying that they are very efficient.
She pledged the association’s readiness to recognize and project activities of women in security sector .(NAN).
