The Federal Ministry of Finance hasdisclosedthat discussions with local and international airlines to secure discounts for travelby government officials are yielding positive results.
A review of Governmentoverheadexpenditure for the period 2012 to 2014showedthattravel was the largest single expenditureitem.Acumulative total of N248billion,equivalent toabout 18% of totaloverheadexpenditure,was spent on travelduring the period.This translates toN83 billion per annum. At a conservative discount of 5% onticketprices,the estimated savings per annum isapproximatelyN4 billion.
The Ministry explained that given the large amount spent ontravel,andconsequentlythesignificantpotential for savings, itisimperative that the Efficiency Unit prioritisestravel asa key focus area for cost cutting and generation of savings. To this end the Efficiency Unit hasengaged in negotiationdiscussions withlocal and international airlinesfor discounts commensurate with the large number of ticket purchases made by Government annually. The savings generatedwill increase funding available to the government for capital investment.
In a statementissuedon Tuesday after a meetingwith senior Arik officials, the Ministryreiterated its commitment to cut costs and promote fiscal prudence. The Ministry acknowledgedthe willingness of Arik Air toprovide discounts on tickets purchased by the Government. In addition to reducinggovernmentspend on travel, the Efficiency Unit has made proposals to the appropriate government authoritiesfor the introduction of guidelines that will reduce the need for travelby localisingtheactivities that necessitate travel, where feasible,and encouraging the use of ICT.
Otheroverheadexpenditure itemsincludinginsurance,advertising andfuel,where the government’sbargainingpower can beleveragedare alsobeing reviewed.
In parallel, administrative controlsare being strengthened through the issuance of circulars detailing appropriate guidelines and the implementation of measures to enforce compliance.
Contains information related to marketing campaigns of the user. These are shared with Google AdWords / Google Ads when the Google Ads and Google Analytics accounts are linked together.
