The Federal Government and Plateau Government have reiterated their commitment to improve the livestock sector to achieve food and nutrition security.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, and Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau stated this when Muftwang visited Kyari on Wednesday in Abuja.

Kyari said that the ministry looks forward to further collaboration between the state and the ministry on how to improve agricultural production and livestock reform.

The minister said that the livestock reform initiative of President Bola Tinubu would soon be unveiled to reposition the sector.

He said that the livestock reform seeks to address issues like farmers and herders clashes with a view to ending them.

”The livestock reform also seeks to open up the livestock value chain because there is huge potential in the livestock that needs to be tapped into.

”I think Plateau stands a very good chance to tap into that opportunity for greater empowerment of the people of the state.

He said that insecurity had impacted agriculture in Nigeria as well as climate change, which brought flooding to some parts of the country.

Kyari, who said that the land mass in Nigeria was shrinking, called for assiduous collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders to resolve the challenge of food insecurity.

Responding, Muftwang expressed readiness to collaborate with the lofty goals of the ministry to ensure food security.

He said that Plateau planned to realise the full value chain of Irish potatoes produced in the state.

Muftwang said that developing rural areas was critical for the state government as well as livestock production.(NAN)
